"Ketaki Gulab Juhi" is my favorite classical song from Hindi movies. Beautiful lyrics and spotless singing by Bhimsen Joshi.

What do the words mean? A wife is enjoying her time on a swing with her husband. While myriad flowers are blooming, the bees are humming and the cuckoos are cooing, the husband is enamored by his wife's sweet talk, her laughter, her shyness and her tresses playfully caressing her cheeks :)

In the movie, the song is a duel Baiju Bawra (Manna Dey) and Tansen (Bhimsen Joshi). Out of reverence for Bhimsen Joshi, who sings far more skillfully in real life, Manna Dey had initially refused to sing this song.

This is one of those compositions that makes me feel that I should have learnt how to sing.. some day! A few years ago, when I played the opening lines of this song on the harmonium, I was delighted to discover that this raga uses all 12 notes! :)

गल-गल कुंज-कुंज, गुन-गुन भँवरों की गुंज

Hindi

मधुर-मधुर थोरी-थोरी, मीठी बतियों से गोरी

शीश झुके, चंचल लट गालन को छू ले
केतकी, गुलाब, जूही, चम्पक बन फूले
