Kithe Meher Ali, Kithe Teri Sana

A vibrant rendition of 'Kithe Meher Ali, Kithe Teri Sana' by Abida Parveen. She sings with openness, directly from the heart, infusing life into all her performances!

'Kithe Meher Ali, Kithe Teri Sana' is a Na`at in Punjabi by Pir Meher Ali Shah (1859 - 1937), a Sufi saint from Golra Sharif, between Rawalpindi and Islamabad, in present-day Pakistan. Its rendition by Abida Parveen is very vibrant!

The Opening Verse: I find the opening verse spectacular: 'Kithe Meher Ali, Kithe Teri Sana! Gustakh Akhiyan, Kithe Ja Adiyan!'. It translates to 'Who am I (the poet, Meher Ali) to admire you or to praise you? How presumptious and impudent are my eyes. They got a glimpse of you and started aspiring for your love and acceptance!' This is a dialogue between the poet and his beloved, the divine.

The opening verse reminds me of a duet from 1960s: Tum Gagan Ke Chandrama Ho. The two singers take turn in admiring each other through a series of beautiful metaphors. Each verse is also a conversation with the divine.

First Poem

Abida Parveen's rendition has two poems. The first poem is from 1:00 to 2:30 in the YouTube video. It was written by Hazrat Sultan Bahu (1628 - 1691), a Sufi poet.

Aye Tan Sache Rab Da Hujra, Khideya Baagh Bahara Hu

This body is the temple of the Lord, like a garden in full bloom!

Vicheyi Maseeta, Vicheyi Musalle, Vicheyi Sajde Saara Hu

Within lies the mosque, within lies the place for worship, within lie all prostrations and prayers.

Mukh Murshid Da Kaaba Qibla, Main Niyat Nemaz Guzara Hu

Sultan Bahu Sat Murshid Mileya, Te Aapeyi Lehesi Sara Hu

Second Poem

From 2:30 onwards in the YouTube video, Abida sings 'Kithe Meher Ali, Kithe Teri Sana', a poem by Pir Meher Ali. The translation below was borrowed mostly from IslamicLyrics.Net.

Kithe Mehr Ali, Kithe Teri Sanaa! Gustaakh Akhiyaan, Kithay Ja Adiyaan!

Who am I (the poet, Pir Meher Ali) to admire you or chant your praise! How presumptions and impudent are my eyes to have gotten a glimpse of you. They started aspiring for your love and acceptance.

Aj Sik Mitran Di Wadheriye, Kyun Dilri Udaas Ghaneriye?

Why is the yearning for the loved One especially strong daily? Why is my heart sadder today than ever before?

Loon Loon Wich Shauq Changheriye, Aj Naina Laaiyan Kyun Jhadiyan.

Why does longing penetrate every tissue of mine? And why are the eyes shedding tears like a shower of rain?

Mukh Chand Badar Shaah Shaani E, Mathay Chamke Laat Noorani E

His face shines like the full moon. A brilliant light radiates from his brow.

Kali Zulf Te Akh Mastaani E, Chitte Dand Moti Diyan Hin Ladhiyan.

His hair is black, and his eyes are bewitched and intoxicated. His teeth are like white pearls.

Es Soorat Nu Main Jaan Aakhaan, Jaana Ke Jaane Jahaan Aakhaan.

I am not sure whether I should call his face the essence of life, or life of the entire universe.

Sach Aakhan Te Rab Di Shaan Akhaan, Jis Shaana to Shaanan Sab Baniyan

The truth is that it is (like) the Glory of God, from which all other (worldly) glories originated.
