Trail Maps

» Official Trail Map: Good quality map showing various trails.

Route

Trailhead: Start at Sandy Wool Group Area.

Ascent (4.0 miles): Tularcitos Trail (0.3 miles) → Agua Caliente Trail (0.4 + 1.0 miles) → Monument Peak Trail (1.4 + 0.3 + 0.6 miles).

Descent (4.8 miles): Monument Peak Road (0.25 + 0.15 + 0.6 + 1.5 + 0.1 miles) → Agua Caliente Trail (0.2 miles) → Calera Creek Trail (1.5 miles) → paved road (0.2 + 0.3 miles)

Notes:

  1. Hang gliders may be seen in air during the hike. Locations of hang gliding take off points and landing points are marked in the official trail map.
  2. The section of Service Road that is adjacent to 'Private Residences' (see Trail Map) is not open for hiking. So during descent, if you come down by Monument Peak Road, you cannot continue along Service Road onto Agua Caliente Trail. You have to make a right turn to reach Calera Creek Trail at an unmarked junction.
  3. As of Feb 2018, park hours are 8:00am to sunset. So if would like to start the hike early, you'd have to find some parking on Old Calaveras Road (not sure if there is any roadside parking along that road) and walk an additional 1.4 miles round trip to Sandy Wool Lake parking lot.
