Ikigai

Among the Japanese, Ikigai means 'a reason for being'.
Original Diagram

Inspired by a TED Talk by Dan Buettner (20 mins, 2009), artists created a Venn diagram to explain the Japanese concept of 'Ikigai'.

In 2012, Dan Buettner wrote The Blue Zones (2nd Edition). This book explores the lifestyle of communities in the world with the maximum percentage of centenarians (people aged 100 and above) in the population. Buettner identified nine factors that contribute to the longevity of Blue Zone residents. Factor number 2 is 'Sense of Purpose': The Okinawans call it Ikigai and the Nicoyans call plan de vida; for both it translates "why I wake up in the morning." Knowing your sense of purpose is worth up to seven years of extra life expectancy. See National Geographic: The Secrets of Longevity and (Wikipedia) Blue Zone for more details.

Modified Diagram

A few years after Dan Buettner's TED Talk (2009), a modified Venn Diagrm appeared on the Internet. This diagram may be more intuitive to some folks:
