What does it mean to live in the present moment? The answer lies in the song 'Main Hoon Jhum Jhum Jhum Jhum Jhumroo', sung to perfection by Kishore Kumar.

The following songs are in the same spirit: Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1957, Nau Do Gyarah) — Tunak Tunak Dhun (1999, Daler Mehndi) — Bhaage Re Man (2004, Chameli).

Hindi

मैं हूँ झुम झुम झुम झुम झुमरू
फ़क्कड़ घुम घुम बनके घुमरू
मैं ये प्यार का गीत सुनाता चला
ओ मंज़िल पे मेरी नज़र, मैं दुनिया से बेखबर
बीती बातों पे धूल उड़ाता चला
मैं हूँ झुम झुम झुम झुम ...

♫ ♫ ♫ ... lots of marvelous yodeling ... ♫ ♫ ♫

Translation

I am Jhumroo (a wanderer or a bumble bee).
Penniless, I wander around.
I sing this song of love for you.
Focused on my destination, blissfully unaware of the world.
Burying the past behind me.

♫ ♫ ♫ ... lots of marvelous yodeling ... ♫ ♫ ♫

Interpretation

The word 'Jhumroo' means wanderer or bumble bee. The movie character 'Jhumroo' has a joyful disposition and infuses happiness into others' lives. My favorite lines are from the first stanza: मंज़िल पे मेरी नज़र, मैं दुनिया से बेखबर, बीती बातों पे धूल उड़ाता चला | Jhumroo's eyes are focused on his destination. He is blissfully unaware of the world around him. In other words, he has nobody to please, nobody to impress. He is at peace with himself. He keeps burying the past, not carrying any grievances with him. That's the way to live!

Hindi

मैं हूँ झुम झुम झुम झुम झुमरू
फ़क्कड़ घुम घुम बनके घुमरू
साथ में हमसफ़र न कोई कारवां
ओ भोला भाला सीधा सादा,
लेकिन दिल का हूँ शहज़ादा
है ये मेरी ज़मीं ये मेरा आसमां

♫ ♫ ♫ ... yodeling ... ♫ ♫ ♫

Translation

I am Jhumroo (a wanderer or a bumble bee).
Penniless, I wander around.
Neither a caravan, nor a companion with me.
Innocent and straightforward,
But with a big heart
The earth and the sky are mine.

♫ ♫ ♫ ... lots of marvelous yodeling ... ♫ ♫ ♫

Interpretation

I love the line है ये मेरी ज़मीं ये मेरा आसमां, which reflects oneness with nature :) When I read this line, I take a deep breath, remembering all the gorgeous places I have visited during hiking trips in Bay Area, California.

The line साथ में हमसफ़र न कोई कारवां (neither a companion, nor a caravan) reminds me that we come into this world alone (birth) and that we leave this world alone (death).

Yodeling was an inimitable facet of Kishore Kumar's singing. It reflected Kishore Kumar's personality very well, as if yodeling and Kishore Kumar were meant for each other :) It is a difficult technique in which a singer alternates rapidly between high pitched and low pitched notes. See Franz Langl, for example: Video I (2:32) or Video II (2:40). Among playback singers in Hindi cinema, Kishore Kumar remains the only one who successfully incorporated yodeling into his repertoire of singing techniques.

Kishore Kumar also recorded songs in which he alternated between a low pitched "male voice" and high pitched "female voice". See Teri Teechhi Nazariya (3:38) from the movie Half Ticket, for example.

Hindi

मैं हूँ झुम झुम झुम झुम झुमरू
फ़क्कड़ घुम घुम बनके घुमरू
मेरे दिल में है प्यार हर किसी के लिये
ओ मुझको प्यारा हर इनसान, दिलवालों पे हूँ क़ुरबान
ज़िन्दगी है मेरी ज़िन्दगी के लिये

♫ ♫ ♫ ... more yodeling ... ♫ ♫ ♫

Translation

I am Jhumroo (a wanderer or a bumble bee).
Penniless, I wander around.
In my heart lies love for everybody.
I find everybody lovable. I admire large hearted people.
My life is for (sustenance of) life (in myself and others).

♫ ♫ ♫ ... lots of marvelous yodeling ... ♫ ♫ ♫

Interpretation

The last stanza is lovely. Jhumroo is lively and energetic. He exudes love for everybody in this world. The final line is the best: ज़िन्दगी है मेरी ज़िन्दगी के लिये, which means that Jhumroo's breath is devoted to sustenance of peace and joy everywhere.
