Year: 1964 Movie: Shagoon Singer: Jagjit Kaur Lyricist: Sahir Ludhianvi Music Director: Khaiyyam Lyrics: here
Out of love, a woman offers to reduce her man's misery by sharing his grief. If her man does not open up, she feels helpless and unloved. Four songs along this theme are listed below.
Four Songs
Dukh Aur Sukh Ke Raste (1961, Sahir Ludhianvi). The lyrics of this song are simple and straightforward, coming directly from the heart. They slowly build up to a beautiful climax. This song is between equals, a couple who is together.
Tum Apna Ranj-o-Gham (1964, Sahir Ludhianvi). This song is most poetic, with Urdu words. The underlying theme is unrequited love. The woman sincerely wishes to help the man she loves. She also seeks acceptance.
Aaja Piya Tohe Pyar Doo (1967, Majrooh Sultanpuri). This song is more 'physical'. The woman invites her man to melt into her arms to relieve him of his misery.
Opening Up
From personal experience, I can affirm that sharing one's inner self (without any inhibitions) with somebody who loves you, is huge! It heals.
Opening Up: The Healing Power of Expressing Emotions by Dr James Pennebaker, 249 pages, 1997, is a fantastic book. It summarizes Pennebaker's research into self disclosure. For over twenty years, Pennebaker studied how verbalization of traumatic experiences aids recovery. Verbalization may be done through writing, journaling, confessions and speaking to strangers (cab drivers or co-passengers in an aeroplane).
My personal belief is that self disclosure with somebody who loves you is most effective. Such a person shall forgive you, hug you and bless you, no matter what is bothering you, no matter what somebody did to you, no matter what you did.
