Song: Abhi Na Jao Chhod Kar Year: 1961 Movie: Hum Dono Singer: Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle Lyricist: Sahir Ludhianvi Music Director: Jaidev Lyrics: here
'Dukh Aur Sukh Ke Raaste' is a sequel to 'Abhi Na Jao Chhod Kar', one of the most romantic songs in Hindi cinema. And what a beautiful sequel it is! The two songs showcase two different forms of love. Both songs are in the box on the right.
Out of love, a woman offers to reduce her man's misery by sharing his grief. If her man does not open up, she feels helpless and unloved. Four songs along this theme are listed below.
Dukh Aur Sukh Ke Raste (1961, Sahir Ludhianvi). The lyrics of this song are simple and straightforward, coming directly from the heart. They slowly build up to a beautiful climax. This song is between equals, a couple who is together.
Tum Apna Ranj-o-Gham (1964, Sahir Ludhianvi). This song is most poetic, with Urdu words. The underlying theme is unrequited love. The woman sincerely wishes to help the man she loves. She also seeks acceptance.
Aaja Piya Tohe Pyar Doo (1967, Majrooh Sultanpuri). This song is more 'physical'. The woman invites her man to melt into her arms to relieve him of his misery.
From personal experience, I can affirm that sharing one's inner self (without any inhibitions) with somebody who loves you, is huge! It heals.
Opening Up: The Healing Power of Expressing Emotions by Dr James Pennebaker, 249 pages, 1997, is a fantastic book. It summarizes Pennebaker's research into self disclosure. For over twenty years, Pennebaker studied how verbalization of traumatic experiences aids recovery. Verbalization may be done through writing, journaling, confessions and speaking to strangers (cab drivers or co-passengers in an aeroplane).
My personal belief is that self disclosure with somebody who loves you is most effective. Such a person shall forgive you, hug you and bless you, no matter what is bothering you, no matter what somebody did to you, no matter what you did.
Dukh Aur Sukh Ke Raaste, Bane Hain Sab Ke Vaaste
Jo Gham Se Haar Jaaoge, To Kis Tarah Nibhaaoge
Khushi Mile Hamein Ke Gham, Khushi Mile Hamein Ke Gham
Jo Hoga Baant Lenge Ham, Mujhe Tum Aazmaao To
Zara Nazar Milaao To, Zara Nazar Milaao To
Ye Jism Door Hai Magar, Dilo Mein Faasla Nahee
Jahaan Mein Aisa Kaun Hai, Ki Jisko Gham Mila Nahee
The paths of happiness and sadness, have been made for everybody.
If you shall be defeated by sorrow, then how will you sustain (our relationship)?
Whether we get joy or sorrow, whether we get joy or sorrow,
Whatever it is, we will share. Try me!
Look at me, look at me!
This body is away from you. But our hearts are not apart.
Who is there in this world, who never faced grief?
Tumhare Pyar Ki Kasam, Tumhara Gham Hai Mera Gham
N Yoo Bujhe Bujhe Raho, Jo Dil Ki Baat Hai Kaho
Jo Mujh Se Bhi Chhupaaoge, Jo Mujh Se Bhi Chhupaaoge
To Phir Kise Bataaoge, Main Koi Gair To Nahi
Dilaaoo Kis Tarah Yaqee, Dilaaoo Kis Tarah Yaqee
Ki Tumse Main Judaa Nahee, Mujhse Tum Judaa Nahee
I swear on my love for you (that) your sorrow is my sorrow.
Do not remain gloomy. Speak up whatever is in your heart.
If you hide it even from me, if you hide it even from me,
Then who will you tell? I am not a stranger.
How may I convince you? How may I convince you?
That I am inseparable from you, and you are inseparable from me.
